Itineray 4 Days Fes to Marrakech Desert Tour
Day 1 – From Fes to Merzouga via Ifrane, Azrou, Midelt and the Atlas Mountains
Your 4-day desert tour from Fes to Marrakech begins after breakfast at your riad in Fes. You travel toward Ifrane, a charming mountain town known for its clean streets and European-style architecture, often called the “Switzerland of Morocco.” The journey continues through the Middle Atlas Mountains to Azrou, a Berber village surrounded by cedar forests where you may see Barbary macaques.
After exploring the forest area, you continue to Midelt, passing through scenic mountain landscapes and changing terrain. The road then leads through the Tizi Ntalghamt pass and the Ziz Gorge, offering spectacular views of rocky plateaus and valleys. As you descend, the landscape gradually shifts toward desert scenery near Errachidia, where you stop for lunch and enjoy traditional Moroccan hospitality. The route continues through the lush Ziz Valley, with panoramic palm-filled views, before passing Erfoud and Rissani. By afternoon, you arrive in Merzouga, where you settle into your accommodation near the edge of the Sahara Desert for an overnight stay.
Day 2 – Exploring Merzouga and the Sahara Desert
After breakfast at your hotel, you begin a full exploration of the Merzouga desert region. The day starts with a visit to Khamlia village, known for its traditional Gnawa music and welcoming community. You then continue to the Mifis mines, an area rich in desert minerals and history. Next, you visit nomadic families living in tents between the dunes and the Algerian border, gaining insight into their traditional lifestyle in this remote environment.
After returning to your hotel, you are welcomed with mint tea before beginning your camel trekking experience. Guided by an experienced camel driver, you ride across the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi, witnessing the peaceful beauty of the Sahara. The silence of the desert and the changing colors of the sand create a magical atmosphere. In the evening, you arrive at your desert camp, where dinner is served and you spend the night in a traditional tent under the stars.
Day 3 – From Merzouga to Dades Valley via Todra Gorge
You wake up early to experience a breathtaking sunrise over the Sahara dunes, one of the highlights of the journey. After enjoying breakfast, you return by camel to Merzouga village while admiring the changing colors of the Erg Chebbi dunes. The journey then continues toward Rissani and Tinghir, passing through desert landscapes and small traditional towns. You reach the impressive Todra Gorge, known for its towering canyon walls and narrow passage carved by the river. Here, you have time to walk and enjoy the dramatic scenery before stopping for lunch nearby. In the afternoon, you continue toward the Dades Valley, a region famous for its unique rock formations, green oases, and fortified kasbahs. The road offers beautiful views of the Atlas foothills and traditional Berber villages. By evening, you arrive at your kasbah-style hotel in the Dades Valley, where you relax and spend the night surrounded by peaceful mountain scenery.
Day 4 – From Dades Valley to Marrakech via Ouarzazate and Ait Benhaddou
After breakfast in the Dades Valley, you begin the final day of your journey toward Marrakech. The route follows the famous Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, passing through the Skoura palm oasis before reaching Ouarzazate, known for its film studios and cinematic landscapes. This city is often called the “Hollywood of Morocco” due to its role in international movie productions. You then visit the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ait Benhaddou, a striking fortified ksar made of earthen clay architecture, widely recognized for its historical and cinematic significance. After exploring the village, the journey continues across the High Atlas Mountains via the scenic Tizi n’Tichka Pass, reaching high elevations with panoramic views of valleys and peaks.
